Extractions Q & A
When are extractions the best choice for my teeth?
Dr. Sheth restores and maintains your natural tooth whenever possible. However, if your tooth is too damaged to fix with a crown or veneers, it may need to be extracted to preserve the health of your other teeth and gums.
You may need extractions if your wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to grow in and become impacted. If your teeth are misaligned and need correction, but there’s not enough space in your mouth to accommodate the changes, Dr. Sheth might also recommend extractions.
What happens when I get extractions?
Thanks to sedation dentistry, today’s extractions are virtually pain-free. If you need an extraction, you rest comfortably in the dental chair while your dentist cleans your teeth and administers a local anesthetic. If you have a complicated case, such as impacted wisdom teeth, Dr. Sheth may recommend sedation to keep you comfortable.
Dr. Sheth may need to cut your gums to reach the impacted or broken tooth. They use special tools to remove the entire tooth, including the root.
Why are clots important for successful extractions?
After your extraction, your dentist gives you a gauze pad to bite down on for 30-45 minutes so that your blood coagulates and forms a clot. The clot helps protect your gums as it heals from the extraction. You’re also given instructions to maintain the clot over the next 24 hours, such as not:
- Rinsing your mouth vigorously
- Smoking
- Eating hard foods
- Drinking alcohol
- Taking drugs
- Exercising
- Drinking through a straw
You can control any discomfort with cold compresses on your cheek and by using over-the-counter pain medicine.
Do I need to replace my teeth after extractions?
If you had your wisdom teeth removed, you don’t need to replace them. Wisdom teeth are teeth that may have served a purpose in our evolution but aren’t necessary anymore.
You should replace non-wisdom teeth that have been extracted to protect the empty space in your gums and to also keep the rest of your teeth in alignment. The ideal tooth replacement is a dental implant, which looks and acts like a natural tooth and even preserves your dental bone.
